Pierce, Thomas, D.D.

Un ecclésiastique anglais du rite, florissant vers le milieu du XVIIe siècle. Il fut éduqué au Magdalen College d'Oxford, et, après ses études, reçut une fellowship. En 1648 il fut éjecté pour non-conformité, mais fut rétabli sous le Protectorat, et devint prébendier de Canterbury et de Lincoln ; en 1661 président du Magdalen College ; en 1671 doyen de Salisbury. Il mourut en 1691. Le doyen Pierce fut un homme d'un talent et d'une culture supérieurs à l'ordinaire. En théologie il fut décidément arminien, et publia plusieurs sermons occasionnels, traités théologiques et brochures controversées. Parmi ceux-ci nous citons : The Sinner Impleaded in his own Court, wherein are represented the Great Discouragements from Sinning which the Sinner receiveth from Sin itself (Lond. 1656, 8vo) : — The Divine Philanthropie defended against the Declamatory Attempts of certain late printed Papers, entitled, A Correptory Correction. In Vindication of some Notes concerning God's Decrees, especially of Reprobation [against Barlee] (Lond. 1657, 4to) : — A Collection of Sermons upon Several Occasions (Oxf. 1671, 4to) : — A Correct Copy of some Notes concerning God's Decrees, especially of Reprobation (Oxf. 1671, 4to) : — Pacificatorium Orthodoxae Theologiae Corpusculum. Secundae huic editioni accesserunt, De perfectissimo Dei cultu ad normam divinam exigendo [Anon.] (Lond. 1685, sm. 8vo). Le doyen Pierce assista également en grande partie l'évêque Walton dans la publication de la Polyglot Bible.
